good old JAM
Yes, I remember now. I was eyeing for this watch for quite sometime that year but wouldn’t buy it because my older watch is still working and in good shape. I just don’t see the need to own 10 or even 2 watches at the same time.. the same goes with handbags. I don’t really wear handbags anyway. I use bags.. big bags that I can put everything in.. like Doraemon's pocket! Perhaps I’m just plain broke to buy more than one of the same gadget.. yes? I feel guilty if I buy something new when the old one is still ok. Luckily at that time, a day before my 20th birthday that friend suddenly lost her watch, so there you go.. I happily gave her my old watch and guiltlessly this watch became my property.

9 years, still working well and already gained a few scratches here and there. I hope you’ll still be with me for at least another year. Will ya? I’ll make a habit to buy a watch once in a decade… unless there’s anyone kind enough to buy me new watches la kan... hehehe.
So another year is almost at the end.. and another number to add to the age. A friend quoted a line from a Philipino series (that I’ve never seen)-> “people should stop counting their age after they turn 30”. So it will be another year before I should stop counting eh? Will I get to turn 30? Or will I even get to be 29 tomorrow? I don’t know.. ajal maut ditangan Tuhan kan. A lady from my former school passed away recently at the age of 30 *AlFatihah to her*. I didn’t know her well, but it was sad to hear that news, reminded me of things that I easily forget. There is no promise that we’ll live up to 70, 60 or 50.. God could call us back any moment now. Are we prepared for that? I am so NOT prepared. My ‘bekal’ to be in the next world is next to none. Really reaaaalllly need to improve on that part.
2005 has been a wonderful year although on my part, I’m not satisfied with my study progress.. I should have done way better. I Thank God for all the blessings. Had new experiences this year. Met new people, made new friends.. some of which I’ve never met – blogfriends la.
Nway, I’ve just did something that I’ve NEVER tried before.. I went fishing! No this is not fishing in the sea or big rivers. I went ‘puyu fishing’ at a canal. Best wooo… for me who was born and brought up nowhere near sawah.. I’ve never seen ikan puyu before this.. ape lagi nak mancing puyu. Gile jakun first time dapat ikan, tu pun nasib baik in ‘control ayu mode’, yelahh kan.. depan makcik pakcik, kalo tak mesti aku dah loncat terjerit2 dapat ikan.. muahahaha hipokrit gilerrr… caught 12 puyus in within 20 minutes.. not bad for a first timer ek?.. nyam nyam nyam.. I’m now in love with pekasam ikan puyu. Bess bess bessssss!!!

40% of U.S$12.5m dollars.. wohoooo... pakcik kayo!
FOREIGN REMITTANCE DEPT.
THE AFRICAN BANK (T A B)
OUAGADOUGOU BURKINA FASO
DEAR SIR,
I am the manager of bill and exchange at the foreign remittance department of The African Bank. I am writing, following the impressive information about you through one of my friends who runs a consultancy firm in your country. He assured me of your capability and reliability to champion this business opportunity. In my department we discovered an abandoned sum of U.S$12.5m dollars (Twelve million five hundred thousand USD) in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customer who died along with his entire family in November 1998 in a plane crash.
Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless some body applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidlines and laws, but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or relation died alongside with him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim.
It is therefore upon this discovery, I now decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and I don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill. The banking law and guidine here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after Seven years, the money will be tranfered into the bank as unclaimed bill.
I therefore agree that 40% of this money will be for you as foreigner partner, in respect to the provision of a foreign account, 10% will be set aside for expenses incured during the business and 50% would be for me.There after I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentages indicated.
Therefore, to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you as arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relation or next of kin to the deceased indicating your bank name, your bank account number, your private telephone and fax number for easy and effective communication and location where in the money will be remitted.
I will not fail to bring to your notice that this transaction is hitch-free and that you should not entertain any atom of fear as all required arrangements have been made for the transfer. You should contact me immediately as soon as you recieve this letter. Trusting to hear from you immediately.
Yours faithfully,
Mrs Dorathy Kanjo

I lost count how many millions/billions/ or trillions have been offered to me now. Seriously, I'm sick of getting this kind of scam in my mailbox... and it seems that Bank of Africa is now keeping too much of dead ppl's money!.. ni dah penat delete.. so today I better make use of it and post it here.. well, just incase you've never received anything like this.. and perhaps YOU wanna be the 40% receiver of the money... go on.. go reply to mrs_dorathy8@hotmail.com. All the best.. muahahhaahaa.
Kalo betul dapat 40%, bulleh gi Mekkoh balik hari! I'm just so surprised by how some people could actually believe this kind of scams.. who in the right mind would want to share millions with a total stranger.
Whoever the sender.. if you happen to read this ('Mrs Dorathy' could be googling her own name and reach my blog kan), stop sending me more offers, please. I'm already a billionnaire (mimpi la Ubiiii!) . Go send it to others, ok.

Break
My eyes are blur, pain at the right end of my head, I have to keep the lights at the minimum. My headache is back since the day I came to Penang.. thank God no noise around here to add to the pain. Now I’m the host of the house. Those who live here are away - one getting married, one on a holiday and one didn't come home.
One tip, if you’ve already bought something that cost you your whole month’s allowance, don’t ever look at the price of the same merchandise in other shops. I forgot that. I bought a digicamera few days ago, burn a hole in my pocket, and today I found the same model at another shop, priced at RM300 cheaper. Adussss sakit jiwa raga!
Ubi will take a break from blogging. She'll be away. Donno for how long.. there’ll be no updates for the meantime. She'll be back if she misses her blog too much :D Taaa..

keys to my heart?
The Keys to Your Heart |
![]() You are attracted to those who are unbridled, untrammeled, and free. In love, you feel the most alive when everything is uncertain, one moment heaven... the next moment hell. Both of you can talk about everything... no secrets. Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment. 23rd and 5th
here’s the instruction:
1. Delve into your blog archive.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions. Ponder it for meaning, subtext or hidden agendas.
5. Tag five people to do the same.
So I digged.. My 23rd post entitled Gym Babe, on the day I registered for my gym membership.. but my 5th sentence got nothing to do with gym, as always.. I can go sukahati to write any title I want. Here’s the 5th one:
“Hm.. may be today will be different, there'll be a Hall's Party tonite... with the theme 'SUPERHEROES & SUPERVILLAINS'..”
It was just a simple ceria ceriti, no subtext or hidden agenda. I was rambling on how my weekends are just like any other weekdays. My Saturdays were typical-> get up-> go for nasi lemak/roti canai breakfast in city-> go sundry shopping-> go home. Life was monotonous. And that day some friends (they are wayyy younger) coaxed me to join the night’s party. I did join them, but only in tees and jeans<- off-duty superhero, whatever.. ok, I’m not into parties, unless if its eat-only-no-need-to-do-anything-else-party.. I just didn’t know what to do there…. Dance? Hell NO!! I only dance when no one’s looking and only in front of my small nieces and nephews (which only meant to make them laugh!). Nway, some kiwi girls pulled me to the dance floor that night.. and for a few minutes I did make a fool of myself- dancing (if such moves qualified as dance), feeling so awkward and looked silly on the dance floor. The moral of the story is- I shouldn’t have been there.. better stick to my boring Saturday routine when I get back there. Ubi has no life! Ok. That’s it.
Now the 5 tags go to:
1. CikYY – to give you a break from thinking of MrDiesel.
2. Scarlet76 – wait.. do you already have 23rd post?
3. Onde – coz I didn’t know you also have a blogspot blog.. I wanna know what's in the archive
4. Sr – because you’re blessed with too many pyrex now.
5. MIV- coz there’s so many things I can’t understand in yr blog, just explain to me one sentence.
Have a good weekend people!

Waikato
Lin caught me on camera stealing 40 winks at the airport cafe
I closed my eyes the whole way to Hamilton.. but I couldn't sleep.. my head already spinning. Arrived in the small Hamilton Airport, smaller than KT airport. Glad that Mrs Turkey Political Scientist was in the same flight, at least I could spend time talking to her while waiting for Mrs Kiwi Religion Researcher who was flying from Otago. Malas nak tunggu.. dalam otak dah nampak katil jer but I already replied her email saying I don’t mind waiting for another hour. Tunggu je la.. at least we can go dutch and get cheaper cab fare.
I love this lively Taiko Drum show by Wai Taiko during the opening, my heart beats faster with the rhythm.. the Conference Convenor was in the group, cool giler. The conference went smoothly. I feel sorta out of place at first because my field is rather different from theirs. I only did a short presentation due to time constraint.. they squeezed in this year’s and past years research travel award winners into one morning session. Everything went well, my big thanks to NZ@sia & VUWChair of M@lay Studies for the sponsor.
darling P@ige
Mrs Kiwi Archaeologist brought her baby, P@ige to all session and good P@ige behaved well throughout other conference presentations. Perhaps P@ige had stage fright that she began to wail once her mom started her presentation, holding her in one hand… no worries, SuperNanny Ubi came to the rescue and took her away. She started to smile again in my arms.. ahhh.. heavenly. She looks like one of those babies in Pumpkin Patch catalogue. Looking at her, I wished I could get Mat Salleh hubby so can get cute white baby like her.. keh keh… on second thought, nahhh.. cannot, Mak is totally against that.
I'm now spending my lazy days at home until the weekend, I prolonged my stay.. the days filled with makan, attend kenduris, and cuddling the little ones.. and make fun of myself in front of the kids... I'll be away again starting this weekend. Take care everyone!

cinta

Cinta - Melly Goeslaw feat. Krisdayanti
menapak jalan yg menjauh
tentukan arah yg ku mau
tempatkan aku pada satu peristiwa
yg membuat hati lara
di dekat engkau aku tenang
sendu matamu penuh tanya
misteri hidup akankah menghilang
dan bahagia di akhir cerita
cinta, tegarkan hatiku
tak mau sesuatu merenggut engkau
naluriku berkata, tak ingin terulang lagi
kehilangan cinta, hati bagai raga tak bernyawa
aku junjung petuamu
cintai dia yg mencintaiku
hatinya dulu berlayar, kini telah menepi
bukankah hidup kita akhirnya harus bahagia
cinta biar saja ada
yg terjadi biar saja terjadi
bagaimana pun hidup hanya cerita
cerita tentang yg meninggalkan
dan yg ditinggalkan
cinta...

me, myself & Irene

I cooked for my final raya guests yesterday. No more guests after this, enough. The last guest- my previous flatmate Irene who will go back to China for good next month. She came with another girl who's name also Irene.
Irene has no religion but she tries her best to be good and treat others in the best way she could. When I look at her, at times, rasa malu sendiri...Aku ni.. tau yang Tuhan monitor 24-7, tapi still ada niat2 tak baik & buat bende tak baik.
Irene gave me a parcel when she was about to leave yesterday, and she did say that she wanted me to eat a lot to fit myself into that thing in the parcel. I opened it - a bright red Cheongsam.. size L! Tried it on, loose.. ok.. will eat more to fit myself into it... but nahh.. I can hardly gain weight. My weight never go beyond a certain number since the last 10 yrs. N'way, whatever the size, I love the gift!

to raya or not to raya
I have no knowledge on hisab or rukyah or whatever method that people use to determine the Eid. I’m ignorant on that. But when I have to choose between the two, whether to follow the Malay gang or the mosque, I choose to follow the Christchurch Mosque decision. I don’t mean to show any disrespect towards the elders of the Malay community, I just decided to not to follow their decision this time. I’ll still join them in any future events. Just not today’s Eid. I mean, I just don’t see the justification why we have to detach ourselves from other Muslims (within the same area) and make separate decision when it comes to religious matters. There is only one Mosque in Christchurch, so I see the mosque as the centre of any decision regarding religious matters. I’ve made my decision, but just to make sure I’m doing the right thing I’ve been making calls asking opinions from family and ustaz in M’sia.
So I’ll be joining the mass Eid Prayer at the Hagley Park tomorrow… together with other Malays who are still fasting today and other brothers and sisters in Islam.
I really hope this disagreement among the Malays would not end up with masam muka.. after all Aidilfitri is supposed to be a day of forgiveness and to strengthen ukhuwah. Let us be one big family again.

moving out
The jukebox-in-my-head been playing this song again & again since last week.. I know people are now either busy preparing for raya, packing to go home, on their way home, or already sampai kampung halaman desa tercinta.
Now I also have some packing to do.. no, not to go home for raya, I'm moving out of the flat.. have to be out by 10am tomorrow. Where to? to the office!
I decided not to get a new place to stay for just 3 weeks. Buang karan having to go all through the procedure.. so I'll just live my life in the office & and spend some sleeping hours & cooking at a friend's place. Basically, there'll be no place to call my own (except the office!), also means that I don't have to play host for any guests for raya. No need to cook.. maybe I'll just prepare some simple dessert to bring to raya gatherings.
Now, kerja banyak.. but have to attend so many raya do.. so how?? Can skip raya or not?

raya fever
Went home and rush to get things ready before Maghrib. Took out the crabs from the plastic bag and realized that I’ve never cook crab before, and I didn’t even know how to clean 'em.. so I called Mak and asked her about the crab, but Mak first lectured me that I shouldn’t be eating crabs since I have mild allergy to crustacean… I told Mak that I’d be ok. I never really follow Mak’s rules when it comes to eating, I follow Ayoh’s principle-‘kalu rasa nak makan, makan je, lepas tu kita beli la ubat’
Following Mak’s instruction, I managed to clean them up and get ketam masak lemak done just before Maghrib. At 8.11pm, ketam was the first thing I reached for after having a tiny date.. perghh..when I eat ketam, jangan kata mak mentua lalu, Brad Pitt lalu pun I tak nak pusing..

Had a small advanced birthday party after prayers. The birthday girl is going to catch a flight back to M’sia tomorrow with two others. I was being ‘tak sedar diri’ and forget that I have a lot to do at home. Then off we went for firecracker galore at rugby field.. got this from PakNSave..NZD15 altogether, Orang had to show ID when paying for it.. and yes, they are LEGAL here and now is the ‘dam dam dum season’ for Aotearoa.
to any kids out there, don't go buy any of these in Msia, they're illegal, ok
I don’t act my age tonight.. feel like I’m 8, enjoying the sparks and colours of the mercun & bunga api at midnight. Gosh, I never knew that most of them are so afraid to handle mercun. The adiks were growing up during the years when mercun & bunga api are totally banned in Msia.. so this ketua budak jahat had to coax the gang to lit up mercun.. at last they got over their fear factor. .. but I also freaked out when one of the big blaster gone wacko and sent fireballs towards us.
my camera battery went kaput and only get to catch this
Now the crabs started to show their effect on me.. I'm itching all over, scratching like a chimp. . aarghh.. now where's my ubat gatal?
To my bukit merbah gang, remember those junior years when we had salam-salam & mercun party before raya hols? That was my best mercun experience.. ya lah, kat rumah mak tak bagi main!

final week of puasa
It’s a hot day.. very hot one.. feeling dehydrated.. not drinking enough water and drinking coffee last night made it worse. I almost pitam when I walked home this afternoon. Everything suddenly turns black, but lucky enough I already reach my front door. Terjelepuk at the sofa for a while.. .
Haven't keep up with NZ news for weeks now. I'm home early today.. came back right after meeting with both SV… so I got to catch the 6 o’clock news and Campbel Live before my bukak puasa at 8.07pm. Who stole that Pania of the Reef statue from Napier? Ek ele.. kat sini pun orang curi ‘besi buruk’ jugak rupanya..
Am losing my appetite again.. I went terkulat-kulat to finish my portion of fried rice. To YY, I know I promised not to put up any food pic.. but I’m sure you won’t drool over this one.
Less than a week to raya. *Note to self: make full use of the magical nights of Ramadhan*. Everyone would be busy at home preparing things for raya or do the last minute shopping for the little rascals. Ayoh would be the most busy this week having to collect the zakat fitrah. He would spend most of his time in the masjid so that ppl can easily find him to pay. My sisters & I used to not to let him spend too much time at home because if he does, ppl will come flocking to pay zakat at our house, meaning that I cannot lepak tergolek depan TV! Some last minute zakat payer can be so annoying that they come to pay after midnight, even at 2 or 3 in the morning.. and Ayoh patiently would welcome them in.. hish.. give that old man a chance to sleep lah!
Now.. I have this itch to main bunga api.. firecrackers are on sale in most supermarts now. I think I’ll go and buy some tomorrow.

Merenung Bulan
moon from bedroom window-13 Oct 05
Entah mengapa mataku ini
Halaman orang nampak berseri
Laman sendiri berwarna warni
Tak bererti
Terlalu asyik memandang bintang
Merenung bulan tinggi di awan
Bumi dipijak
Rumput yang hijau kulupakan
Entah mengapa sering terlupa
Rahmat yang tiba berbeza-beza
Untuk semua kurniaan Nya tak terhinggga
Janganlah asyik memandang bintang
Merenung bulan tinggi di awan
Bumi dipijak rumput yang hijau
Dilupakan

Bring your own plate
I was buta kayu and know nothing about NZ culture when I arrived here. I couldn't really understand their English at first, when most of the 'e' suddenly sounded 'i'. There were no Malays within 15 km radius except a family which was about to leave for good. All the adiks went back to Malaysia 2 days after I arrived.
My SV pre- arranged for a postgrad student, J, to pick me up. J fetched me and brought me to his place first because his flatmate, G, was still preparing some spring roll to bring to the party. I thought ‘baiknye these guys, siap bawak food lagi’.
After half an hour drive, we finally arrived at my SV’s house, a beautiful place with great view. The other guests arrived and I noticed everyone came with a PLATE OF FOOD. At that time barulah mentol atas kepala ni menyala..there I was cursing at myself.. kenapalah aku blur sangat.. bende macam tu pun tak paham ker??? Nak gelak pun ada jugak.. lucky I had my empty plastic plate safe in my bag, so no one noticed I came with an EMPTY PLATE.
So you all, if you’re happen to come to Australia or NZ, and ppl ask you to bring a plate to a party, it means BRING A PLATE OF FOOD TO SHARE, not an empty plate. Don’t be a kayu pembaris yg lurus bendul like me!

Bday Breaking Fast
It was Anne's 21st birthday.. so I planned a surprise party for her. Ok, I won't call it a 'surprise' because we had parties for everyone's birthday.. I mean not EVERYONE, but at least for that 6-kanak2-ribena + 2-not-so-young-but-pretended-2b-young-ladies. So everyone knows that they're gonna get something on their birthday. Anne told me earlier, 'tak payah susah2 la' coz she'd be sitting for an exam the next day.. a party would take hours, buang masa dia.
So, instead of a party, I told the others, 'let's just have a bukak puasa together, a quick one... so no calit2 cream on each other, no baling tepung or whatever. just a short, no mess bukak puasa.. and you gals don't bring any food, too much food would take too much time eating'. I decided to make some beriani rice & honey chicken.. but found out I'm running out of beras and no chicken! Lucky Neem said she'd buy the chicken and bring some beras. I told her to just leave the chicken & beras it at my place, I'll cook when I get home.
Balik-balik je I went straight to the kitchen.. alamak! one big problem for me.. Neem bought one WHOLE chicken... ah sudahhh.. I have a confession to make.. I don't know how to cut whole chicken!!. I only buy nibbles/wings/breast/drumstick.. but not whole chicken.. aiyya.. so what to do?
so plan changed.. clean the whole chicken...line the baking tray.. the chicken became 'ayam tergolek dork'! belasahhhh...Lucky I still have that santan powder, so can curah2 santan on the chicken like you do ayam golek. So nasi beriani+ayam tergolek.. double the fat. Never mind, they were all muda remaja.. healthy enough to take those fat... There were also choc mousse for dessert (Neem bought that one) and cekodok pisang from Lia. I was expecting a small crowd of 5-6 ppl because everyone was saying they were not sure whether they could come or not.. but it turn out to be a party of 8Malays, 2kiwis, 2 chinese & 1 Maldivian. Lucky I cooked 2 cookingpots of rice.. but only one chicken! nasib la.. some only get to eat bones, kesian.
I didn't feel well towards the evening after done all the cooking. After my first suap of nasi for breaking fast, my tummy started to ache.. memulas siot. So I didn't play the 'good host'.. left them to eat and enjoy themselves, I got back to my room and merengkok in the blanket after putting loads of 'minyak cap kapak'. Perut masuk angin daaa...
one.. two. sengih!

On a sunny noon when people are flocking to library studying for exams in shorts and tees, these ppl tersengih-sengih infront of the lib parading in colourful clothings. *rasa macam finalist miss world in traditional outfit* (read: perasan).

MC
Ubi the good flatmate (isn't she Anne?) still cooks for bukak puasa eventhough she's exempted from puasa today.
Today Ubi got her monthly MC. No wonder she feels like crying so much these days, she's more sensitive on her pre-MC days. She has some explanation on why she feels so sad on pre-MC... it's her body mourning because another ovum is going down the drain unused, wasted. She still wonders when the day will come for her to put an ovum into use. Ubi still envies AllyMcBeal who suddenly had a girl knocking on her door claiming to be her daughter. Lucky Ally! Unlike Ally, Ubi is very sure that no one's gonna come and claim to be her daughter/son because she has never donated any of her mature follicle to any research centre. Ubi still fantasizes to have a lovely daughter just 16 yrs younger than her so she can become a lovely sporting mom like Lorelai Gilmore. That, however, will remain a fantasy because when Ubi was 16, Ubi was surrounded by girls, girls, and girls. The only contact she had with the opposite sex was through innocent letters she wrote to her childhood sweetheart in KT.. and that did not involve any physical contact.
Few years ago Ubi read an article in TheStar about a website called mannotneeded.com (no, don't go check it out, it is no longer available!) which sells sperms to women who wants to have kids without the presence of man. That same night,Ubi had this freaky dream, a salesperson from that website came to see her to sell his sperm. The guy didn't want to leave when Ubi said "NO, I don't want to buy that". He insisted that Ubi purchase his 'thing'... to get rid of him, Ubi gave an IQ test in which he scored extremely low (don't ask where Ubi got the IQ test from, it was in a DREAM ok!). So Ubi told him "I don't want your genes because I want my child to be a genius! now buzz off!!" Ubi woke up thanking God that it was just a dream.
Ubi still hopes to have her own kids one day (no Ubi will NOT make her future hubby do any IQ test!).. but she has to put that plan on hold at the moment.

remembering Tok
Tok was a divorcee. Tokki remarried and live in the next kampung. I was never close to Tokki. Never had the chance to. Tok and Tokki separated long before I was born. But I believe Tok still loved Tokki till the day he died. I was 9 when Tokki passed away, and on that day I saw Tok crying when she was doing the dishes, a silent one but I could see she was throbbing. She tried to hide her tears from everyone. I didn't ask her why. At 9, Tok showed me that sometimes you could never stop loving someone even after you go your different ways.
Tok had 7 children, 4 died, leaving only my Mak, Pak Mat and Ayah Ngah. Tok lived alone in her small house 40m from ours. She came to our house everyday but she never wanted to sleep at ours. Mak repeatedly asked her to move in with us, but she never wanted to leave her house. She even refused to leave the housewhen the kampung was flooded. Tok agreed to leave only when the water started to reach the floorboards and Ayah had to coax her.
Tok’s live was hard.. I could see that. She told me stories of zaman jepung and the hardships that she went through. And she continued to appreciate every little things she had in life. Never ever waste any food in front of Tok, you’d get a long lecture from her if you do so. Tok would recycle almost everything. I remember my sister taught me, if you want to get rid of yesterday’s leftover, even the stale ones, do it when Tok was not around. If not, she would take it and salvage it in anyway she could.
Having 8 + 1 children (my parents adopted my younger bro when I was 6), Mak was very busy taking care of everything in the house, so I turned to Tok for company. I would accompany Tok to Mokcik Ma’s house in a kebun nyior near a river. Tok would have a chat and had a few sireh (betle leaves) with Mokcik Ma. Mokcik Ma was a fine lady, the daughter (or daughter in law?) of Dato’ Amar who founded the kampung. Everytime Tok had her sireh, I would get one too.. the taste was nasty! Mokcik Ma had a well kept fragrance garden, and each time we went there, Tok would join Mokcik Ma picking kenanga (Canangium odorata), melur (Jasminum sambac) and cempaka (Michelia alba). Tok would put some of the flower in her nice little glass jar which contained homemade coconut oil for her hair. Sometimes Tok had fresh flower folded in her sanggul. She would put the rest of the flowers in her folded prayer telekung.
I couldn’t remember when my house started to get piped water supply. But I remember following Tok to get her bath at telaga Mokcik Ating which was the best crystal-clear water well in my kampung. There was (and still is) a well at surau next to Tok’s house but the water was less clear compared to telaga Mokcik Ating. I would help Tok carry a few small ‘klorok’ (a small plastic ‘minyak cap buruh’ container) of water back to Tok’s house from telaga Mokcik Ating.
Sometimes I followed Tok to bathe in the river. And if it was 'tijah' or 'tijing' (small river clam that looked like remis) season, we would go during low tide to look for 'tijah' in the river sand. I would patiently wait in Tok's small kitchen afterwards to get my gulai lemak tijah.
Tok performed all her daily prayers at the surau next to her house. And she had her regular place on the right corner of the front row at the ladies side. I would keep her company at times. They perform 20 rakaat of Terawih during ramadhan at the surau, Tok asked me to pray at the back row because I would stop praying after only a few rakaats, lepak for a while, then start doing my 'job'- I was assigned to arrange kuihs on the plates for 'moreh' during Terawih nights.
Sometimes Tok picked some wild coffee berries that grew beside her house. And I patiently followed through her every steps of making homemade coffee, or ‘kahwe’ as Tok called it. Later in my secondary school I realized where the kahwe was actually ‘kahwah’, the Arabic word for coffee.
Tok was very good at making kuih… one of Tok’s special delicacy was ‘tepung torak’. Tok also made nice baulu.. or as I called it ‘woh ulu’. She used that metal springy thing which we called ‘kepuk telor’. I usually helped Tok to kepok telor, but only half way through.. when I got tired I would sneak out and leave Tok to do everything on her own. Mak told me that in her younger days Tok made kuih for sale… all sort of kuih, some of which I've never heard of.
When I was 10, I looked forward to weekends when I would make plans with my cousin to sleep at Tok’s where we'd have Maggi party. Maggi mee was totally forbidden in my house but not at Tok’s. Tok would help us light the fire to cook Maggi. Tok only had dapur kayu. She refused to change to dapur minyak or dapur gas because she said the food wouldn't taste the same. I loved to eat at Tok’s. Her simple menu of rice and ikan singgang goreng (just fry yesterdays’ ikan singgang) were irresistible! Even having plain rice and keropok at Tok’s tasted out of this world!
I learnt to do many things at Tok’s, things that I did not get to do at home. Once I tried to kopek kelapa (de-husk a coconut) using golok (hatchet) and cut my thumb. That was the first time I knew that I cannot see my own blood. I fainted right after. Ayah came to pick me up after that and I was given a long lecture to add to my pain.
After school I would have my ngaji (Quran class) at Tok De’s, Tok’s sister-in-law. I usually put my Quran, scarf and sarong at Tok’s. I had that sarong ready because if I wore short skirt, I could just wear the sarong on the outside to cover my legs. After ngaji I would make a stopover at Tok’s, leave everything and go straight to wherever the kampung gang wanted to play that day. If I go home after ngaji , I wouldn’t get the chance to sneak out after that.
One day Tok decided to let Manja, her grandniece to come and stay with her. She was from a broken home. She clinged on to Tok 24-7.. I used to find fault with Manja, perhaps out of jealousy. And everytime she cried (she was a crybaby), Tok scolded me and was always on Manja's side. Starting from that time, I no longer spend much time with Tok, for Tok already had someone to care for. A year after that I left for boarding school.
Years passed by and I spent less & less time at home, and lesser time with Tok. Manja no longer lived at Tok's, she returned to her mom. By the time I completed my bachelor degree, Tok was getting weaker. All her friends including Mokcik Ma and TokDe answered the Almighty's call long ago. I remember Tok saying that since all her friends were gone, she should be leaving soon. My younger bro sleeps at Tok's at night. Mak sent food for every meal and slept at Tok's whenever Tok was not well. Tok still refused to leave her house. Not even to a clinic or a hospital. My bro had to ask the doctor to come and check her at home whenever she was ill. On any days that she felt she was stronger, she would walk with her walking stick to the new mosque.
All my siblings work in Terengganu. I was and still is the only one away from home. Everytime I went home from Penang, Tok said to me,
"kalu mung dengor orang kabor aku sakit ker, mati ker, mung dok soh susoh-susoh la nok balik.. siang ke mung.. mung duk jauh.. wak nyusoh jer nok hungga balik..."
(If they inform you that I'm ill, or if my life ends, don't bother to come home... poor you.. You live so far away. You shouldn't take the trouble to rush home...)
Everytime she said that, I pray to God that I could be with her when she breathe her last.
Ramadhan 1424, Tok was very ill. Tok moved in at Mak's more than two years ago. She could no longer walk. I couldn't wait to go home when Mak told me Tok was very weak and barely ate anything. I arrived home two days before Raya. Tok looked very frail and could barely talk. I spent the few days I had helping mom to feed and bathe Tok.
1 Syawal 1424, I didn't feel like celebrating raya that year but visitors came endlessly. It wasn't the usual raya visit. They came to visit Tok.
3 Syawal 1424, My siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews gathered around Tok since daybreak. Tok was surrounded by all cucu and cicit. Neighbours who had their Subuh prayers at the mosque also drop by and stayed. Mak, Ayah, Cik Ngah, my brother and my brother-in-law sat close to Tok's head repeating the syahadah. I sat with my nieces reading Yasin opposite Tok's feet. Tok's breath getting shorter, my ustaz bro-in-law cited doa and whispered syahadah to Tok. I fought back tears by concentrating on my Yasin. The next thing I know, my bro-in-law said Innalillah. The whole room was silent for a moment, then I heard whispers of innalillah, people were hugging each other and eyes were wet with silent tears.

sushi queen
I love sushi! I learnt to love sushi when my boss introduced me to it 2-3yrs ago.. and Scarlet (with her Viva friend) treated me to loads of sushi when she came to Penang. I was addicted to it. If you walk around first floor of Bukit Jambul Complex on friday evenings during those years, you'd see a girl sitting alone in Sushi King picking one plate after another from the conveyor. Almost none of my close friends in Penang liked sushi. Some almost puked when I asked them to try and gave me the "why the hell did you make me eat this" look. Since then, I treasured having sometime alone.. just me and sushi and free flowing green tea. Yumsss.
Anne & I made some sushi today to bring to a potluck buka puasa. When it 's potluck, be prepared to stuff yourself to the max. If 30 ppl come, you'd get almost 30 types of food to eat and lots of tapau to bring home.

tacos anyone?
kalau dah perut melayu tu, melayu jugak!! just less than 2 hrs after eating two of these for bukak puasa, I found myself eating toasts because my tummy asked for some more carbo. Rice would be better, but I didn't cook any lauk today.
Anne and I decided to make tacos for our breakfast. We bought the taco shell few weeks ago. We have to move out of the flat on Nov 1st, I'm gonna be homeless on raya eve, so we'd better finish off whatever food stock we have... gosh, the food shelf is still full with dried/canned/packed food. Lotsa eating need to be done in the next 3 weeks and we can only eat at night.
I forgot to buy sour cream, so no guacamole in the taco. I had no cheddar, so parmesan also can do. That was my first time making & eating tacos... so everything was based on the recipe on the box. The box did not warn us that eating taco could mess you clothes and table. Some more red stains on my t & pants. Everything would fall off once you make the first bite on the crispy corn shell. So better don't eat taco when you're out on a date. Anyway, I don't know whether the one that we had was authentic Mexican-style taco or not. It could be NZ version of it.
Err.. why do I write about food so much these days?
Suatu hari di hari puasa
Here's another song that I tried to find in my head last nite but I couldn't.
Harapan Ramadhan - Raihan & Man Bai
Ku mengharapkan Ramadhan
Kali ini penuh makna
Agar dapat kulalui
Dengan sempurna
Selangkah demi selangkah
Setahun sudah pun berlalu
Masa yang pantas berlalu
Hingga tak terasa ku berada
Di bulan Ramadhan semula
Puasa satu amalan
Sebagaimana yang diperintahNya
Moga dapat ku lenturkan
Nafsu yang selalu membelenggu diri
Tiada henti-henti
Tak ingin ku biarkan
Ramadhan berlalu saja
Tuhan pimpinlah daku yang lemah
Mengharungi segalanya dengan sabar
Kita memohon pada Tuhan diberikan kekuatan
Ku merayu pada Tuhan diterima amalan
Selangkah demi selangkah...
Dengan rahmatMu oh Tuhanku...
Ku tempuh jua
I love this song.. a good reminder actually. Not many songs actually put focus on Ramadhan.
I'm gonna help Anne prepare some taco for today's bukak puasa. Have a nice weekend everyone!

head & lung
my masak asam kepala salmon
Selamat berpuasa to all..
Thanks to those who gave suggestions on what to do with my salmon heads . I had masak asam salmon head for my first buka puasa. The kuah masak asam was sedap (no, I tak pandai masak, I had my perencah ready!).. but I promise myself I'll never buy fish heads again.. Anne and I did not know how to eat the head... we went "alamak.. nak makan part mana lagi ni? orang makan ke benda ni?.. ada isi ke?.."
I usually see people eating fish head dismantle the whole thing until it no longer look like a head- only pieces of bones & operculum. Anne and me only eat the flesh part. And the head was still intact when it went into the trash. hmm.. I better stick to other parts of fish anatomy next time.
I'm craving for paru goreng (fried cow lung)! I love the thinly sliced crispy paru goreng.. where can I get that in Christchurch?
*should I go sneak into the nearest farm and cut open a cow and steal the lung?*

PMR?
Alamak.. PMR starts semalam? I forgot to wish good luck to my three nephews- Amin, Ahmad & Azahan – no, they are not triplets, my 2 sis & bro had boys on the same year. The last time I saw the boys, they have grown to be handsome young men, dah sama tinggi with their dads, diorg pun dah malu nak gimme a peck on the cheek. I don’t have to worry much about my nieces' results, but my nephews- I scratched my head when I heard of their trials results.. their parents pening, I pun tumpang pening! I hope all three will do better this time. *saying my prayer*

Head or tail? Head!!
But earlier tonite as I walked down the fish section at PaknSave, some salmon heads caught my attention. And they were CHEAP! NZD2++ per kg. Salmon fillets were pricey, but not the heads. Poor ppl like me couldn’t be choosers. So I asked Anne (my flatmate) whether we should try to make use of the heads, she agreed. There you go, I have a kilo of salmon heads in my fridge but totally have no idea what to do with it. Anyone got salmon-head-dish recipe?

Not love..
Yang ku mahu
Darimu persahabatan yang ku perlu
Kerna cinta
Takut nak ku beri
Teman yang sejati lebih bererti
Pada diri ini.
A snippet from my fave song- Bukan Cinta from Afdlin's album. I received Afdlin's Fuyoo album few days ago from Afdlin Shauki dah hilang akal project... Finally last night I got the chance to listen to it back to back.. I love the album! LOVE IT! ok yeah, may be he doesn't have a vocal that can win him "best male vocal on album" in AIM, but I love his songs.. this is the kind of singer that speaks from the heart.
Now I should go and process my payment for the album... yes, get CD first pay later maaa!. that kodok is crazy enough to do it that way.

starry starry night
Looking at the stars is just like travelling back in time... you see them as they WERE, not as they are. The stars are hundreds, thousands, and even millions of light years away.. so what you see today is something that sparkled in the past.. some may no longer exist today, some may have ended the star life cycle by now.
Watching the stars made me smile.. I remember EJ, a good friend that used to layan my star gazing hobby. He used to share stories, facts and other stuff about astronomy, taught me how to spot constellations. In my third year of degree, 5 yrs ago, there was a meteor shower.. it was sometime in Ramadhan. EJ came to meet me at our design studio. I can still remember that face with a scar on his cheek (left or right? can't remember). I walked with him to a parking lot, away from lighted buildings. Many students were already there. Some equipped with telescopes and some with sleeping bags- good idea, they can just lie on their back and keep their eyes on the sky.. I had to endure neck pain for looking up for hours.
We sat side by side at a curb at the corner of the parking lot. The sky was a bit cloudy that night, so I had to really concentrate to spot a meteor with my naked eye.
EJ: "come.. make a wish"
Me: "ok.. nak wish la ni.. meteornye tak nampak lagi"
EJ: "what do you wish for?"
Me: "I'm not gonna tell you"
My wish went to my childhood sweetheart who was then in California. I was head over heels with him at that time.
EJ and I spotted our first meteor. I was excited giler.. never seen a meteor before that.
Me: "so what do you wish for?"
EJ: "engkau lah"
Me: "what?!"
EJ: "I wished for you and me.. US, together" he nodded and grinned like kerang busuk.
Me: "sudah la ko mengarut!" I hit him with my empty coke can, he just laughed. I had some weird feeling inside when I heard him saying that.
EJ: "nkau nak kawin umur berapa?"
Me: "apsal nkau tanya soklan mcm ni?"
EJ: "aku tanya.. jawab please"
Me: "entah... erm.. lets see.. lepas habis ni aku nak sambung lagi.. err.. 28 kot, why?"
EJ: "kalau dah 28 nkau tak kawin jugak.. kita kawin dua ek"
Me: "amboi mcm my best friend's wedding la pulak"
EJ: "aku cakap betul ni, serius!"
Me: "ha.. hahahaha.. lawak la nkau"
EJ: "no.. SERIUS.. kalau ko tak kawin at 28, kita kawin dua"
Me: "hehhehe.. hhmmm.. ye lah" I made a 'toye' face
EJ: "promise?"
Me: "errmm.. tak nakkk!" stomp my feet on the tarred surface.
EJ: "Please..." he made that face I that I could never say no to.
Me: "huk.. ye lahh.. ok"
EJ: "Promise!" with his right hand up
Me: "hmm.. ok.. promise"
I spotted 23 meteors that night.
Today,
I have 3 months before I leave 28.
I wonder where EJ is right now :)
Perhaps he's happily married now.. with kids.
I could picture him smiling.
Today,
I still enjoy watching the stars.
I could still see the past.
I am smiling too.

Spring..and then snow?
Woken up by full bladder at 4am and off to the loo. I pull my bedroom curtains open before I get myself back in slumber. Look out and look up the sky.. something odd.. some whitish thingy is falling… o my God it is SNOWING!! Subhanallah!
I thought I’ll never get to see snow this year (my first year here).. yeah, having Edward Scissorshand already changed his job- from an ice carver & snow maker up on the hill- to become the Wonka Chocolate Factory owner… the winter was a mild one. The sun shines brightly for the past few weeks and I’m already in the spring mood… spent sometime yesterday snapping piccies of trees and flowers and admiring their colours and scents.. today, everything’s white!
Call me jakun or darat or peghak if you want.. but this is my first snow experience… the uni is closed today with the sudden heavy snow fall. And I’m off to enjoy it in the rugby field... can golek-golek.... Taaa!!

marilah mari pergi mengundi..
Today- on election
-New Zealanders cast their vote in their General Election, which is held once every 3 yrs
-I drove to Canter lib in city.. didn’t really see signs of ‘election day atmosphere’ as what I usually see in M’sian election day. .. no roadside booths with ‘perayu undi’ (what do you call them in English? Vote pleaders?), no overzealous fanatics 'fighting' outside polling centres.
-the only sign that shows today IS the election day are the arrows with the sign ‘polling centre’ at almost every kilometer
-things went on as any normal Saturdays here. Rugby match is on as usual. Canterbury is beating against Waikato tonight.
- National Party led the count at first... then Labour party slowly closed the gaps and took over the lead- by the time I’m writing this, the two main parties only have a difference of 1.2% votes
-A ‘Sept-11- pilot-wannabe' stole a plane and threatened to crash into Auckland tower.. and end up crashing into the sea… may be he just planned to get the attention away from the heated vote count
Now I’m sitting in front of the TV following the latest update on the election results. Hek ele.. macam aku pulak yang mengundi... hehe.. lepas gian.. I’ve voted twice in Malaysia.. but on both occasions I did not get to follow the results update. I spent both 'vote counting nights' on the bus back to Penang…got to know the final results by the time I arrive in Penang next morning which made me say either a ‘yeay!’ or grumble ‘hmm..penat jer aku balik’.
For the past 10-15 minutes the camera is focusing on Helen Clark’s house gate. There was NOTHING to see there except some beautiful woodwork at the porch that caught my attention.. Helen is nowhere in sight.. hello mr cameraman, go shoot something more interesting la!.. oh.. ok finally Helen is out of the house.. and went straight to the Labour Headquarter.
I adore Helen Clark, she’s smart, and proven to be a good manager... so if I'm eligible to vote here, she gets mine.
On FOOD
I was craving for masak asam.. I've never cook masak asam before, but I know it will taste better if you have bunga kantan (torch ginger) in it. I think I've seen it once here but couldn't remember in which shop... went to 5 asian shops looking for it, got tired of explaining what torch ginger is to the shopowners. Some showed me somekind of flour when I told them it is a flower. So I end up without bunga kantan but went home with a bag full of greens & a packet of 'thai fish satay'. My masak asam still taste good without the bunga kantan. Thanks to maggi hari-hari favourite!
